SNOW in September?!

I was checking my email a few minutes ago and an urgent weather alert came across the wires from the National Weather Service. I thought at first it was a test for the upcoming winter weather season. But to my surprise, this was no test! Yes that is right, this is NOT a test.

This is the warning for the Seattle area for Friday:

…SNOW SHOWERS ARE LIKELY IN THE OLYMPICS AND CASCADES ON FRIDAY…

A STRONG STORM SYSTEM WILL USHER IN A COLDER AIR MASS ON FRIDAY THAT WILL CAUSE SNOW LEVELS TO PLUMMET AS LOW AS THE 4000 FOOT LEVEL. SNOWFALL AMOUNTS ARE EXPECTED TO BE LESS THAN 3 INCHES.

HOWEVER THE AIR MASS WILL ALSO BE UNSTABLE ENOUGH FOR A CHANCE OF THUNDERSTORMS…WHICH COULD RESULT IN LOCALLY HIGHER AMOUNTS.

PEOPLE PLANNING TRAVEL IN THE HIGHER CASCADE PASSES…SUCH AS WHITE PASS OR STEVENS PASS…ON FRIDAY SHOULD BE PREPARED FOR WINTER DRIVING CONDITIONS. BRIEF BURSTS OF HEAVY SNOW COULD MAKE FOR HAZARDOUS DRIVING CONDITIONS.

THOSE PLANNING ON HIKING OR CAMPING IN THE OLYMPICS AND CASCADES ON FRIDAY SHOULD BE PREPARED FOR CHILLY…WET WEATHER.

So buckle-up kids, get those winter clothes out and be sure to bring your tire chains!
