My wife and I are considering changing careers to Team OTR Drivers. What would you reccommend as the best way to start our careers? Would you reccommend we start with Schneider National for school and 1st uyear of driving?

    Hello Bill,

Schneider National would be a great place for a husband / wife team to start their careers as OTR Team Drivers. Check out other carriers such as US Xpress, Swift Transportation, Werner, Gordon Trucking, Interstate Distributing and other major “team friendly” or “team oriented” trucking companies.

Do your homework and keep your ears and eyes open. Don’t always believe what the recruiter (saleman) has to offer. Go to any major truck stop such as a TA, Flying J or Petro and talk to teams who work for those companies. Buy them a cup of coffee or sit down for a light lunch. Get as much information about those companies you are interested in working for and take notes. Really, talk about it with your wife away from the influence of a recruiter. Don’t sign the first contract you see! Do they offer free training? How often will you see your home? If you have a clean DMV record, can follow directions and are overall decent people, don’t worry, they will be eager to call you back.

As starting team drivers, you should easily make between .45 cents to .50 cents per mile! If you could run 10,000 miles a month, you and your wife could make in excess of $100,000 to $125,000 dollars per year!

Good luck in your search for a good company! There is absolutely nothing wrong with starting your career with a company such as Schneider National.

    God Bless!

Hubby and I are also thinking about changing to a team otr career. We are in our thirties/forties, no kids/family obligations, clean MVR, no smoke, no drugs, decent and smart. I currently drive a forklift at a loading dock for a major freight shipping company and hubby is a complete “gearhead”, both of which I hear is often a plus. We also plain love to drive. I think we’d be a great fit for this excellent paying job.

The only sticking point we have is our dog. We just CANNOT consider not having him with us. He’s a well-behaved medium sized old sop of a hound dog. Any thoughts on what good company might be willing to train us and still allow us to keep our pooch on board?

Please email me at jeffnjennusa@hotmail.com. Thanks very much and God bless.
